I've just installed the binary distribution of freeciv 2.1.1 on OS X 10.5.1 (PPC) to give it a try. Where there should be letters on the starting screen (after the Aqua prompts of for name, etc) there are just little boxes.

Other X11 applications seem to run fine on my system.

I've placed a screen shot of the window at [1]

This looks like the game is started in a language for which you don't have a font. What is the default language on your system? --Hima 06:09, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

The default language on my system is US English. And that is what I selected for playing the game. I will try starting it with another language and see what happens. It also fails with Hungarian.

Try deleting the contents of Freeciv/Contents/Resources/freeciv/share/locale/ (you can access the contents of an application package by right/control clicking on it and selecting 'Show package contents'.) --Hima 13:12, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, that doesn't help either. One bit of speculation is that I have some X11 stuff installed in /sw by fink. I don't know if that is interfering with anything.

Very strange behavior indeed. It could be something funny with your version of X11, but it's hard to know for sure. If you tried an earlier version (browse Sourceforge downloads) we could see if it's a problem with this latest package. There's one special build that runs without X11 that you could try, but be warned: it is outdated and buggy - you can't load savegames for example. --Hima 08:36, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
